Who is this for

Do you need an IEC?

📦 Product Exporters
Customs will not clear your shipment without a valid IEC. Required before your first consignment leaves India, regardless of value.
🌐 Service Exporters
IT, consulting, and design firms receiving foreign currency for services need IEC to receive payment via FIRC and claim LUT/Bond refunds under GST.
🛒 Importers
Importing raw materials, machinery, or goods for resale? Customs clearance at any Indian port requires your IEC to be on record with DGFT.
Important: IEC is a national registration — the same code works from Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, or any other port. You do not need a separate IEC for each city or state.

FAQs

Common questions answered

No. IEC is a central DGFT registration and is valid across all of India — all ports, all cities, all states. One IEC covers your entire business regardless of where you ship from or receive goods.
Yes, for most practical purposes. While the DGFT has clarified that service exporters don't always need IEC, banks require it for FIRC issuance, and GST authorities require it for LUT/Bond filing to export services without paying GST. IT companies, consultants, and freelancers who receive foreign payments all benefit from having IEC.
IEC has lifetime validity — no renewal required. However, DGFT mandates an annual updation on the DGFT portal between April and June each year (even if there are no changes). Failure to update may result in deactivation of the IEC.
Yes. Proprietorships, partnership firms, LLPs, private limited companies, public limited companies, trusts, and HUFs can all obtain IEC. The PAN used for the application should match the entity type.
The DGFT charges ₹500 as the government application fee for IEC registration. This is payable online via the DGFT portal during the application. ComplianceDesk's CA fee is separate.
Authorised Dealer (AD) Code is a 14-digit code issued by your bank, registered with customs. It links your IEC to your bank account and is required for customs clearance on export shipments. If you're exporting physical goods, you'll need AD Code registration — our Premium plan includes this.

About IEC Registration in India

The Import Export Code is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is governed by the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) and is mandatory under the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992.

Every importer and exporter in India — from a small handicraft exporter to a large automobile manufacturer — must quote their IEC in all customs declarations, shipping bills, and import/export documentation. Banks also require IEC to process foreign inward remittances and outward payments related to trade.
