FAQs

Common questions answered

Udyog Aadhaar was the older system (pre-2020). The government replaced it with Udyam Registration in July 2020. If you registered under Udyog Aadhaar, you need to re-register on the Udyam portal to continue availing MSME benefits. Old certificates are no longer valid for bank loan applications.
It's not legally mandatory to operate a business, but it is required to access MSME benefits — including CGTMSE loans, government tender preference, priority sector lending, and delayed payment protection under the MSMED Act. Without it, banks and government bodies won't treat you as an MSME.
Yes. Pvt Ltd companies, LLPs, partnerships, proprietorships, and trusts all qualify. The classification is based on the entity's investment and turnover, not its legal structure.
No. Once issued, the Udyam Registration Number (URN) is valid for the lifetime of the business. However, you must update your PAN and GSTIN details annually on the Udyam portal for the certificate to remain active.
If your turnover crosses ₹250 crore, you cease to qualify as an MSME. You must update your records on the Udyam portal and you will be de-classified. However, benefits already availed are not affected retroactively.
Yes. Businesses below the GST threshold can register on Udyam without GSTIN. Only PAN and Aadhaar are mandatory for registration.

About MSME Udyam Registration in India

The Udyam Registration portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) was launched by the Ministry of MSME in July 2020 under the revised MSMED Act. It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar system and introduced a PAN and GSTIN-linked registration process tied directly to government databases — making the registration paperless and self-certified.

India has over 63 million MSMEs employing approximately 110 million people and contributing around 30% of GDP. The Udyam certificate is the entry point to this entire ecosystem of government support — from the CGTMSE credit guarantee scheme to the MSME Samadhan delayed payment portal.
